Lin Junyi was born in China to a Chinese father (of North Korean descent) and South Korean mother. She began learning how to dance at age five and her parents sent her to China to learn classical ballet when she was nine.
When Junyi was thirteen, her mother brought her back to Korea to audition at various entertainment agencies. However, she was rejected by many agencies because of her height.
At fifteen, Junyi gave up on auditioning in Korea and returned to Beijing, enrolling in Beijing Contemporary Music Academy with the aim of becoming a professional dancer. During one summer break, Junyi accompanied her friend to audition for a talent competition show. The production team noticed Junyi's abilities and invited her to join the show. Junyi found the experience enjoyable and it motivated her to pick up her dreams of being in a girlgroup once again.
In May 2018, Junyi joined Produce 101 China as a contestant. She was recognised by the mentors to be one of the top trainees, gaining an A Rank during her initial audition. However, she was eliminated early in the show, leaving with a rank of #72.
In October 2018, Junyi participated in another elimination programme, The Next Top Bang. She was eventually among the six members selected to join the lineup of the girlgroup Legal High. The group released two songs and has not had any activities since May 2019 despite not being formally disbanded.
In May 2020, Junyi returned as a contestant of Produce Camp 2020. She was voted by fellow trainees to be the initial centre of the theme song MV. Although Junyi was acknowledged as a strong contestant and made it to the finals, she was not selected to be a member of the debut group. Her final rank on the show was #10.
